This is the first style of Farmer issued by Royal Doulton.  The second shows a farmer holding a pitchfork.  The first style was issued along with the Farmer's Wife (carrying a basket of eggs) and the Country Maid (stood with a calf). There have been various figurines with a farming theme issued by Doulton over the years, including four different types of shepherd.
